  • What should I expect from the initial evaluation?
The initial evaluation is a time for the therapist to get to know your child, your family and examine physical and neurological functioning. We encourage a loving and supportive environment and strive to make even our evaluation time with your child fun and playful. Frequently, we will schedule two sessions as our evaluation process is quite comprehensive and thorough. Because a single session is a very small snapshot in time, we believe we get a better picture and understanding of your child's full needs when we can see them over two separate appointments. Depending on your child's age and abilities, the first session will last one to one-and-a-half hours and the second session is usually completed in an hour. Your input is vital. While we want your child to show us all he can do, we will count on you to provide information as well. The therapist will give you some idea at the time of the evaluation as to his or her initial impressions about your child's needs as well as a recommended plan of treatment moving forward. It is important to understand that therapy is a dynamic process that involves a combination of continuous treatment, evaluation of progress and coordination with the family.

  • What do I need to bring to my child's first appointment?
Please arrive at least 15 minutes early for your first appointment so you have time to register and go over the necessary paperwork. Feel free to download our Intake Form from the patient forms, fill it out ahead of time and bring it in with you. Please arrive with your family insurance cards. In addition, it is very helpful if you take some time to write down questions you may have, common signs, symptoms and difficulties with activities your child has. If you have any helpful prior reports, lists of medications and other medical or school documentation that may assist the therapist with getting to know your child's history, please bring those as well. In addition, please bring any necessary equipment or assistive devices that your child commonly uses.

  • How does my child get started at Black Hills Pediatric Therapy?
Simply contact us at 605-222-7336. We will get you started with the easy intake process. Our friendly staff will ask you questions about your child's therapy needs, information from your physician and insurance information. Our billing office will contact your insurance company to verify benefits for your insurance plan. This is not a guarantee of coverage by your insurance company, but will give us some information to get started. Because we need a physician prescription for evaluation and treatment, we will assist you in what to ask your physician. We will assist you in then scheduling a convenient appointment for your initial evaluation. It is helpful to fill out our Intake Form found in patient forms prior to coming in for therapy.

  • How are therapy services paid for?
We will bill your medical insurance if that is available and we accept your plan. We do offer convenient options for cash plans for families without insurance. If your insurance plan has a deductible or co-payments, the appropriate payment will be due at the time of treatment. Our billing office is happy to make convenient payment plans with families. We accept cash and checks.

  • How long is each treatment session?
Each session is generally 1 hour, which allows approximately 50 minutes for treatment and the remainder of time to discuss the session and explain the home program. We would prefer that a caregiver is present at the session so that we can demonstrate activities for you to do with your child. This also gives you a chance to share your experiences with your therapist. It is our goal to be sensitive and respectful to your family and other families. Therefore, being punctual with the start and end of each session is important to everyone.

  • What should my child wear to therapy?
Comfortable, stretchy, but not too loose or too bulky clothing is best, so your child will be able to move readily without restriction. It's also a good idea to have a sleeveless top and shorts available for your child to change into, particularly with physical therapy. Sometimes the therapists need to have a better look at upper or lower extremity joints, including the joints above and/or below the one that appears to be affected.

  • What is your cancellation policy?
Success begins with consistency of treatment. The more consistent your child can come to therapy, the better their results. We appreciate a 24 hour notice for cancellations in order that a therapist might schedule another child. Please call us in advance if you must cancel. Ideally, we can reschedule your appointment for a more convenient time.
